Vision Big Wild envisions a North America in which our relationship with the land is one of healing and restoration, protection, and careful utilization of resources outside of protected areas.
We envision a reduced human population, the re-establishment of livable communities, and the utilization of low-impact, low energy-use technologies for homes, food, and transportation.
Above all, we envision the rewilding of America: Big Wilderness in an interconnected reserve system encompassing 30-50 percent of our landscape.
Though we realize that our society is far from sustainable, we dream of humans and wilderness in a dynamic partnership on a greener, wilder Earth.
Projects
Gallatin Wilderness Campaign: Howie co-founded the "Montanans For Gallatin Wilderness" committee, which is working to designate the Gallatin Range, which lies within and just north of Yellowstone National Park, as a designated wilderness area.
Yellowstone Wilderness Campaign: Big Wild Advocates is working to protect the backcountry of the world's first national park as designated wilderness, under the Wilderness Act of 1964.
Wilderness Stewardship: Our close working relationship with Wilderness Watch promotes good stewardship of the existing National Wilderness Preservation System. Howie is a past president of that national conservation group.
Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act (NREPA): Howie is an original author of this visionary wilderness legislation that would link and protect the remaining public land roadless areas and wild rivers of the U.S. Northern Rockies. Big Wild Advocates continues to work to enact this legislation.
Conservation Education for Young People: Marilyn makes occasional presentations of her unique conservation visual aid program to school groups. Howie is an instructor of Environmental Studies at Montana State University-Billings, where he teaches "The American Wilderness". Big Wild Advocates helps to fund his transportation to and from Billings, which is 160 miles from home.
